Some background... By GM1SXX
John, LA2QAA has been trying to find, build, scrounge a 2M PA for some time. He had a FT290MKII that was fit only for the bin, so it was 'butchered' for parts, there being no branch of Maplin, CPC or FARNELL on Frei Island. By a combination of sheer skill, luck etc, he managed to build a working PA from the 'innards' of the FT290, which just happened to use a Mitsubishi M57727 PA module which he 'merged' with a metal lunch-box and various other bits of assorted rubbish. Here's the story.... as told by LA2QAA in an e-mail to Al...
I actually managed to 'squeeze' 10 watts of RF out of the 2m BRICK I
'thieved' from the mutilated FT-290RII .
Not having the chips (no fish either) I used 1n feedthroughs 'borrowed' from a
bit of Telenor gear (well, shows they're good for summat!) and 2.2uF caps
soldered onto bits of copper on double sided tape glued to me' aluminium
lunchbox !! (well, what did you expect !!! from LA2QAA).
Chucked an old kitchen sink (sorry, mean heat sink) on the 'arse-end' for good
measure. It bloody works too !!!.
Here are some photos of the 'offending item'.
